Villefranche-sur-mer is a commune heaped above an idyllic harbour on the French Riviera. Unlike most of the other Riviera beaches, the one in Villefranche is not private. Plage des marinieres is the main beach and where the locals go and have their picnics. At the far end of the beach you find Plage de l’Ange Gardien, where dogs are allowed in one of the corners. Plage de la Darse is a different type of beach, close to Port Royal de la Darce. Villefranche’s fishermen stick to traditions and every year in February they celebrate Carnival. But the celebration of this carnival is a bit different. They celebrate it with a Bataille des Fleurs (Battle of Flowers). The parade is on the water and the boats are decorated with colourful flowers that they throw at each other and to the people. Then, another parade with music and costumes is celebrated along the streets.

The Old Town is a great option to take pleasant strolls and get lost in the steep, narrow streets amongst old colourful facades, quaint cafes and unique independent shops. Visit the 1260 passageway under the harbour front houses dating back to 1260, known as the Rue Obscure or “Dark Street”. A spooky but interesting experience.

The little Roman chapel of St Pierre is next to the port and it is dedicated to the Patron Saint of fishermen, St Peter. Inside you can admire the frescoes after the restoration by Jean Cocteau.

Among the several line-up of restaurant terraces along the seafront, you can have fantastic meals with succulent recipes with seafood, shellfish and local produce. Try the restaurant “Sweet Life”, a shabby-chic lounge-bar with international bistro cuisine. In the old part of town, Les Garçons offers creative cuisine in a romantic atmosphere by twinkling lights at the bijou stone square. Try the star of the menu - red tuna tartare with avocado.
