The area and getting around
Cardiff is Wales’ southernmost city, looking out over the Bristol Channel. It is easily accessible from Bristol in England via the Bristol Tunnel, and is 3-hour drive west of London. Once there, the city is relatively flat and easy to walk around, with an excellent bus service if you need to go further afield. To get from the town centre to Cardiff Bay in the far south of the city you can take the bus, train or even a waterbus. Here you can see many of Cardiff’s sights, and of course the infamous Dr Who Experience!
Touch the heart of Welsh historyAt the centre of Cardiff City is the remarkable Cardiff Castle, but it is only one of many fascinating connections with the history of Cardiff. St Fagin’s National Museum is open-air, and takes the visitor from Celtic times onwards. History is created in Wales at The Senedd, home of the Welsh Parliament. Just six miles north of Cardiff is the stunning Castell Coch, a delightful fairy tale castle built in the gothic style.

Cardiff for history enthusiastsIn a country with around 600 castles you’d be hard pressed to find one more fascinating than Cardiff Castle, with a fainting history going back to Roman times. The castle is right in the centre of the city and the focal point of the downtown area. Initially a Roman fort, a castle and keep was built in 1066 after the Norman invasion. Most recently the castle was reinvented by the Victorians, adding quirky features and a sense of fun to what had previously been solely a defensive structure. A trip to the top of the castle keep is an absolute must, with astonishing 360˚ views over the city and sea beyond.
The gold leaf covering the ceiling in the Cardiff Castle’s Arab Room has an estimated value of £8 million!
