On the other hand, Montechoro offers plenty of out of town rentals available for those craving privacy and a quieter area. The good news: the beach is never far away in Albufeira!

    Holidays in Albufeira

    The area and getting around

It’s the liveliest resort town in the Algarve.

In the southernmost Portuguese region of the Algarve you find Albufeira. A relaxed atmosphere in town, a delicious barbecued on coal piri-piri chicken with its hot chilli sauce and lovely walks along the most amazing beaches of the Portuguese coast. For celebrations and special occasions you have come to the right place. The nightlife in Albufeira is vibrant and everybody is welcome to step on the dancefloor. Check out The Strip where you’ll find heaps of themed-bars and clubs. Piccadilly Cocktail Bar is one of our favourites.

Sandy coves and blue crystal waters

Albufeira is famous for its beaches. It’s wide and sandy coastline attracts a multitude of visitors from far and wide. Albufera is surrounded by superb, golden beaches with stunning rock formations, pine gardens and impressive cliffs from where to watch the sunset. Praia de Falésia, Praia do Sao Rafael, Praia de Galé and Praia dos Olhos de Agua are some of the nicest. If you don’t want to go too far, Praia do Tunel and Praia dos Pescadores are the closest ones to the Old Town. Battling for a stretch of sand is not your scene? Head to the upmarket Santa Eulalia beach just a few kilometres away and spend your time in its clear azure waters, popular with both snorkelers and swimmers.

    Travellers and activities

Albufera for walking and active lovers

The Algarve is truly a sunny piece of this planet. People come here to unwind at natural wonders. Impressive cliffs, rock formations and a beautiful coastline where to do the cliff walk. From Senhora da Rocha to Praia da Marinha, this spectacular walk takes you along pretty bays and important landmarks such as Cape of Saint Vincent, Ponta da Piedade or Praia da Marinha. If you are more into sailing, any boat trip that starts in the relatively new marina will provide you with all the ingredients to spend a fabulous day sailing the Atlantic ocean.

    Ancient influences for history lovers

History buffs will be right at home here. The coastal resort is home to a variety of Roman attractions which date back centuries to their occupation. The Romans weren’t the only ones to gain a foothold in Albufeira though. The Moors are thought to have invaded the Algarve back in the 8th century. They built such strong defensive structures that the Christians were unable to regain control of the region until the end of the 12th century. In fact, the name Albufeira originates from the Arab Al-buhera, meaning castle of the sea. Fascinating right?

Albufeira was included in the list of top travel destinations for 2012 in the New York Times.

Top 5 travel tips in Albufeira

    1. A tree shaded retreat

Visit Albufeira Old Town Square to get an authentic taste of this ancient fishing village. Here you’ll find great restaurants and people watching spots. Peruse independent jewellery boutiques and sample freshly caught seafood after a long day at the beach. Let the kids play in the square as you sip on a cold glass of local craft beer.

    2. A historic temple of worship

Pay a visit to Igreja Matriz, Albufeira’s main church, to learn a little more about this historic region. It dates from the 18th century and it’s said to be the best example of neoclassical art in the Algarve. Did we mention it’s home to a statue of the town’s patron saint too?

    3. A water-filled adventure

Zoomarine theme park is an absolute must for families. We’re talking aquariums, pirate shows, water slides and wave pools. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s the only place in Europe where you can interact with dolphins in the pool. Not sure one day is enough? Grab a great value two-day pass for double the fun.

    4. Praia dos Pescadores

Say hello to Albufeira’s busiest and most famous beach. This vast expanse of golden sand is just a short walk from the Old Town. It takes its name from the fishing boats that once launched from and moored here. The inflatable water park makes it a big hit with kids in the summer. Parents take note. Adults can try their hand at a variety of water sports, including jet skiing and parasailing.

    5. Museum of Sacred Art

If you’ve seen enough of the beach, then spend some time exploring the town’s cultural offerings. The Museum of Sacred Art is housed in the restored 18th century Chapel of San Sebastian. Here you’ll find religious art from the churches that survived the 1755 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
